When machines evaluate risk, relevance, or trustworthiness, their conclusions gain an aura of objectivity. Human discretion begins to feel unreliable by comparison. Over time, deferring to systems becomes the default — even when human insight would add nuance.

The danger is not total control, but gradual adjustment.
People adapt their behavior to systems they cannot see. They optimize profiles, follow recommendations, avoid triggers. The system learns, responds, and reinforces the pattern. Feedback loops form — not imposed, but internalized.
Automation does not need consent when compliance feels natural.
Reclaiming Awareness, Not Control
Stopping automation is neither realistic nor desirable.
AI systems provide real benefits and will continue to expand. The issue is not their existence, but their opacity and inevitability. Consent cannot be meaningful without understanding, and understanding requires transparency.
Awareness is the first form of resistance. Knowing where automation operates, what it decides, and how it can be challenged restores a degree of agency.

Automation without consent is not a technical failure. It is a governance failure.
As AI becomes embedded into everyday systems, society must decide where automation is appropriate, where human judgment must remain, and how individuals can meaningfully opt out.
Because the most powerful technologies are not the ones that force obedience —
but the ones that make consent unnecessary.
